Current Recipients
The 2011 grants have been distributed by the Quad Cities Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for programs who support unique breast cancer education, outreach, or screening and treatment for the medically underserved. Research projects are not considered.
The grants awarded covered programs in the Komen Quad Cities Affiliate service area, including Scott, Muscatine, Cedar and Clinton counties in Iowa, and Rock Island, Henry, Mercer and Whiteside counties in Illinois. The Affiliate focuses its resources on the following types of projects within their service area:
This year the Quad Cities Affiliate granted out a total of $406,252.24 to bring support, promote awareness and encourage action to those in the Quad Cities and surrounding areas.
Grants Awarded in 2011
Trinity Medical Center-Lymphedema Compression Garments - $5000
- One of the most feared consequences of treatment for breast cancer is swelling of the arm or lymphedema. Certified lymphedema therapists are available locally to assess and treat lymphedema but the cost of treatment is often prohibitive. The funds from this grant will provide money toward the cost of compression sleeves, gauntlets and gloves for those with lymphedema.
Whiteside County Health Department- Whiteside County Hispanic Breast Health Education - $5,000
- This program will provide breast health education services to women of the Hispanic community in Whiteside County. Education, Spanish literature and case management will be provided through bi-lingual Whiteside County Health Department staff. Education will be provided to lower income Spanish speaking women with an emphasis on the importance of monthly breast self exams, annual clinical breast exam and mammogram.
Louisa County Public Health- BCCEDP Muscatine County Outreach - $7,909.24
- Funds for this grant will go to help the Washington/Louisa County Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. This program educates women about the importance of early detection and helps them to obtain free breast and cervical cancer screenings. This grant will give women in Muscatine County access to no cost mammograms.
Genesis VNA and Hospice- Clinton County BCC Program
$8,000
- This grant will help to fund the Clinton County Breast and Cervical Cancer Program. This program provides opportunities for free breast and cervical cancer screenings, some diagnostic testing, and offers the Breast and Cervical Cancer Treatment Act to women with pre-cancerous conditions. The BCC Program also strives to educate women regarding the need for regular breast cancer screenings and serves the uninsured and underinsured.
Genesis Medical Center - Voucher Program - $293,660
- The Voucher Program is funded by a grant from the Quad Cities Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and is administered by Genesis Medical Center. The program provides financial assistance to persons who reside within the 8-county service area of the affiliate and cannot otherwise afford a mammogram or breast ultrasound. Persons with insurance are offered limited assistance. The grant provides for program administration and service payments.
Genesis Medical Center – Breast Prosthesis and Bras
$18,400
- This program allows women to receive breast prosthesis and bras at little to no cost. This is the only program in the area to assist with costs for these items.
Genesis Medical Center – Medical Alert Bracelets
$6,650
- This program helps provide medical alert bracelets to those with lymphedema. The bracelets are stainless steel chain-link and are engraved with “NO MEDICAL PROCEDURES THIS ARM”. Bracelets are ordered from Necker’s Jewelers who receive no profit from the purchase. The Trophy Shop does the engraving for $1. Persons are also provided with lymphedema precaution education materials as well as information about Susan G. Komen and their mission. A fluorescent sign is also provided for the recipients to place above their bed if they are hospitalized. The sign states, “No B/P or LAB DRAWS ____ ARM”. This program will be implemented at Illini, DeWitt, BIC, Trinity Moline, Trinity Bettendorf, Trinity Muscatine and CGH Medical Center.
Genesis Medical Center – Wig/Wig Care Kits
$22,800
- The Voucher Program established an exclusive relationship with Betty’s Wig Boutique in Davenport. This arrangement allows women to have a personalized wig consultation and fitting at a locally known business. Many women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer already seek services from this shop and our relationship allows the Voucher Program to reach more women from throughout the service area. In addition to the wig of their choice, women are provided a care kit with shampoo, spray, wig stand, brush and a night cap.
Church of Peace- Health Education for Minorities/Immigrants
$4,500
- Church of peace Cancer Prevention outreach will target minority and immigrant women of the community so they can access health education, services and the necessary tools for learning about breast cancer. Church of Peace’s hope is that these women will have the same benefits to knowledge and hope that most women in the United States do.
Mercer County Hospital- “Show You Care, Be Aware” Campaign - $8,100
- Mercer County Hospital will kick off an annual “Show You Care, Be Aware” campaign for women’s breast health. Through the use of direct mail media, a vigorous and effective marketing too, the campaign will be demographically and geographically specific as well as cost effective. The campaign will target women who meet the age and screening criteria along with those who do not receive consistent medical care. Information regarding the importance of mammograms along with available services and financial resources will be included in the materials. Additional promotion will be provided through radio spots, advertisements and community presentations by various medical professionals.
Gilda’s Club – Survivor Group
$13,035
- Each Thursday night Gilda’s Club holds a survivor’s group. Family members and support persons are encouraged to attend as well.

Small Grants Awarded in 2011
United Neighbors – Beauty Salon/Barber Shop/Nail Salon Early Detection - $750.00
- This project is an educational outreach program directly in beauty salons, beauty schools and barber shops. Women will be shown how to do self-breast exams, they will learn the importance of mammograms from the educational materials provided to each patron. They will receive healthy snacks. They will also continue the project to minority barbershops and educate men about breast cancer not only for the women in their lives but also for themselves. Breast cancer quiz and evaluation forms will be provide to those who participate. Two nail shops have been added to the project.
United Neighbors – When Women Talk - $2500
- This project will focus on women’s health education. It will take place during the week of Mother’s day a the Annual National Woman’s health week. It will focus on breast and cervical cancer and other health issues. It is going to be a forum setting that will allow women to talk about health issues and to get answers to questions.
United Neighbors – Soul Stroll Health and Fitness Day - $850
- This project will be held during the National breast awareness month giving the local women another opportunity to receive information on health lifestyles provided through educational proactive health workshops and local speakers. Information will be provided about our local resources, doctors and medical facilities. This even hosts the “Pin a Sister” opening ceremony, an activity that honors our sisters that have lost the fight, our sisters that are still fighting and our sisters that continue to promote the importance of proactive health care.
Gilda’s Club – Healthy steps Comes to Henry County - $4,298
- Healthy steps is a proven program of dance and exercise to address the effects of lymphedema in those affected by a breast cancer diagnosis.
Gilda’s Club – Hispanic Luncheon - $4,800
- With the assistance of Casa Guanjuato, they would like to reach the Florciente neighborhood by having a luncheon and seminar hosted within the neighborhood and in Spanish. All material will be translated to Spanish for those who attend.

Grants Awarded in 2010
The Quad Cities Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is pleased to announce its 2010 grant recipients for projects supporting breast cancer education, screening and treatment of the medically underserved.
Nearly $350,000 was awarded through the yearly grant process to community groups and agencies in an eight-county service area. The dollars granted were raised at the 21st annual Susan G. Komen Quad Cities Race for the Cure held in Moline, Ill. The major grants funded include:
- Beauty Salon and Barber Shop Early Detection Program - $750, to United Neighbors Inc.
- Clinton County Breast and Cervical Cancer Program Support - $8,800 to Visiting Nurse Association of Clinton
- Hispanic Breast Health Education - $6,250 to Whiteside County Health Department
- Understanding Women's Health from a Man's Perspective - $2,350, to United Neighbors Inc.
- Muscatine County Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, Outreach Program - $8,434.35 to the Louisa County Public Health Department
- Reach Out for Early Detection - $5,000 to Henry County Health Department
- Voucher Programs of the Quad Cities - $347,860 (administered by Genesis Medical Center)
